The Phillip Business District is defined by its unique geographic location at the heart of the ACT and bounded by Hindmarsh Drive, Athllon Drive and Melrose Drive.
The decision to develop the “Phillip Business Community” PBC for short, has evolved over the past 18 months from discussion with several businesses that have operated within this area for several years. They feel that substantial benefits can be obtained by having such a group.
The initial aim of the PBC is to provide a forum through which local business owners, managers and key staff will be able to connect and build beneficial relationships. A community of likeminded business operators (members) and their staff gaining benefits from getting to know each other and sharing their knowledge via a number of media, such as:
- Website – phillipbusiness.com.au
- Directory – Phillip Business Directory
- Meetings – Keynote Speakers or Group discussion on Topics of Interest to Members.
- Newsletter – Emailed to members as required
- Functions – Depending on what the members decide (fundraising or social etc.,)
Communication is one of the most important keys to building a strong and successful community; so let’s have a look at each one of these items one by one:
Website – The phillipbusiness.com.au will give every business in Phillip a FREE listing for their business by Category and Sub-Category and these listings can be self-managed by the business owner. The website will also have a blog and members will be able to make posts about their business and these posts will then automatically link into our social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
Directory – Once the database listing every business in Phillip has been compiled this will be converted to a pdf file so that PBC members will be able to access and download the PBC Directory from the website. A useful tool to contact and do business with other local businesses. The who’s who in business in Phillip.
Meetings – One of the key initiatives of the PBC will be to organise information and training sessions on topics selected by the members. These meetings will also provide an opportunity for some members to eliminate the isolation of working just within their business, by becoming part of a much broader community that is energised by interaction with others.
Newsletter – One of the most effective ways of communicating the same message to so many is via email. It is proposed that a monthly update will be sent to members of the community and members will be able to provide information to be shared through this medium.
Functions – Social functions can often be what builds and binds solid, generous and friendly communities. It will be up to the members to decide what activities to engage in or individual members may already be involved in events that they can then share with everyone in Phillip.
The costs to operate such an organisation efficiently.
It is proposed that the “Phillip Business Community” membership will be FREE and sponsored by businesses in the area who want to advertise on www.phillipbusiness.com.au. Banner Advertising and paid Specials of the Day advertising opportunities will be available. Time will tell if this is the most cost effective way of funding such a Community initiative.
The ongoing benefits:
By exposure to other business owners and managers, members will benefit from a unique opportunity for networking, business and friendship, through a variety of experiences, events and information sharing that will become available over time.
The “Phillip Business Community” will evolve as each member establishes their own unique position and credibility and identifies opportunities that such a Community organisation can provide through meaningful interaction.
The opportunities will be different for everyone and every business – it’s just a matter of finding what works best for you by getting involved in one way or another.
